The “AMERICAN FLAG”

The “AMERICAN FLAG”

Today I picked up my news stand copy of ” Backwoods Home ” magazine.
Included is an article on the American flag. I am going to do a large quote here. Well not really a quote because it is the criteria set down by the U.S. congress in 1942. However, since it is part of the article from BWH, I wish to give them the credit.
I learned these “rules” when I was in the cub scouts, and again when I was a Marine. I am talking about the “folds” and what each fold means.
I betcha a lot of people have no idea that each fold represents a special meaning. We have all seen the flag is folded into a triangle.
It has 13 folded portions they represent the 13 original colonies.
The first fold symbolizes life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is for the veterans who gave their lives in our defense.
The fourth fold symbolizes our dependence on God’s devine guidance in peace as well as war.
The fifth fold is for our country.
The sixth fold symbolizes the place our country holds in our hearts.
The seventh fold is in tribute to the Armed Forces that protects our country against all her enemies.
The eighth fold honors mothers.
The ninth fold is a tribute to American women.
The tenth fold is a tribute to fathers.
The eleventh fold holds symbolic meaning for Americans of Jewish faith, honoring the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The twelfth is for American citizens of the Christian faith, honoring God the Father, The Son , and the Holy Spirit.
The thirteenth folded section shows the stars uppermost, reminding us of our Nations motto, ” In God We Trust” .
When the flag is folded it is a triangle, which is symbolic of the tri-cornered hats worn by patriots during the American Revolution.
Red symbolizes valor and hardiness.
White symbolizes innocence and purity.
Blue represents justice, vigilance and also perseverance.
Much more is involved of course, but I felt this is the essence of what the flag is.
To read the whole article get the July/August 2011 of “Backwoods Home ” magazine. There are many other fine articles in this issue as well.
